Excommunicated. Craig Hoyle's Moving Story of Leaving the Exclusive Brethren
In this session Jane Kennedy talks to Craig Hoyle about his memoir, Excommunicated. Craig’s story is heartbreaking, beautifully written and points to a life of meaning, possible after leaving a high-control, abusive environment. Craig speaks gently and with compassion about his immediate and extended family. Both sides of which have deep roots in the Brethren. What stands out is how it’s possible to rebuild identity and a sense of self when you are held and supported by people from outside the group when you leave.
We acknowledge the Indigenous people of the lands we have recorded on. Our speakers and hosts are located on Aboriginal Country all across the lands now called Australia and Maori lands across Aoteoroa. We pay our respect to Indigenous elders who are custodians of these lands and extend that respect to any Indigenous people attending our event.
