Social Worker & Researcher Theologian, Pastor, Researcher, and Educator

About this speaker

Dr. Joel Hollier is a theologian, pastor, researcher, and educator whose work sits at the crossroads of faith, sexuality, and inclusion. Living on Wangal Country, Australia, he brings a unique blend of scholarly depth, pastoral experience, and social work expertise to his work. With a PhD in Behavioural Science, his research explores the intersections of trauma, faith, gender, and sexuality, shedding light on the harm caused by exclusionary religious doctrines and practices.

An internationally sought-after speaker and experienced social worker, Joel has worked extensively with young people who have experienced trauma, creating therapeutic spaces for them to build resilience and reclaim their narratives. His book, A Place at His Table: A Biblical Exploration of Faith, Sexuality and the Kingdom of God, challenges restrictive interpretations of scripture and invites a more expansive, affirming spirituality. Currently teaching at the University of Sydney, he continues to engage diverse communities with empathy and openness, fostering dialogue and belonging in spaces often marked by judgment or fear.

Joel co-pastors New City Church and is married to Thomas. Usually with a coffee in hand, he spends his time thinking about creativity, faith, and the complexities of caring in the modern world.
